This is a good example of a pin-connected Pratt truss in North Carolina, where this bridge type is rare. The NBI gave a 1932 construction date which may suggest this span was moved here at that time. The style of the bridge is that of an early 20th century bridge, perhaps dating to as late as 1915.
Information and Findings From North Carolina's Historic Bridge InventoryDiscussion of Bridge The pinned connections and appearance of this Pratt through truss bridge suggest it was erected for Avery County about 1915, rather than in 1932, the construction date assigned to it in state bridge records. It may have been moved to this site over the Elk River in that latter year for, as the number of automobiles and traffic increased, the state often relocated truss bridges from primary highways to local roads. The bridge has seen many changes over its life: beams have been welded to the floorbeams, connections replaced and strengthened, and the original railings supplanted. This maintenance has allowed it to survive and, in spite of alterations, the bridge remains a good example in North Carolina of a pin-connected, Pratt through truss.
