This unique footbridge is noted for its rare design which is configured as a bowstring deck truss span over the river. The bridge also features an impressive approach consisting of steel stringer spans supported by riveted steel bents. The approach spans over the north end also pass over railroad tracks that hug the riverbank and to accomodate this, there is a steep ramp that increases the height of the bridge over the railroad tracks and brings the bridge up to the higher level of Locust Street at the north end. This bridge retains outstanding historic integrity with no alterations noted. Due to its lack of alteration and unique design the bridge should be considered among the most significant of North Carolina's historic bridges. Main span length given is an estimate.
As of 2020, there have been discussions of a rehabilitation of this bridge.
