This truss span and a few approach stringers is all that remains of what appears to have been part of a high-level bridge that crossed the Cuyahoga River and the industry next to the river at one time. At one time, there was an unusual Cowing patent roller bearing bascule bridge over the Cuyahoga River on Jefferson Avenue. This bridge may have been part of that crossing.
Today, the bridge that is left remains an interesting and historic structure. The truss bridge features six panels and appears to retain good historic integrity. A few approach spans remain as well, but these are severely overgrown with bushes and trees, and the railings are falling off of these spans.
This bridge features guardrails for the sidewalks that are a style of railing that showed up occasionally on old bridges in various forms, but all utilizing the same lattice below and arch shapes on top. They are today a rare find, and are among the more ornate and beautiful of railing designs.
This bridge is tagged with the following special condition(s): Arch Lattice Railing
