The Ohio Turnpike is a rather boring highway both in terms of bridge design and scenery, however the cut through the impressive Cuyahoga River valley is a break from the monotony. The unusual topography (compared to the rest of the Ohio Turnpike) resulted in this unusual overpass that soars high above the turnpike, while the turnpike is cut through the rock of the valley as it descends/ascends from the river valley. The cut required a long span overpass, but the height of the overpass roadway above the turnpike would have required very tall and expensive piers. As such, the arch bridge allowed for construction of single long span to eliminate piers. The steel deck arch is also able to take advantage of the rock in the cut, with its skewbacks mounted on the solid rock. In addition to the interesting design of the bridge, it is also an older overpass with a 1954 construction date. As such, the bridge is of riveted construction, adding to its historic value.
