This unique bridge was built as part of the Sandy Beach Amusement Park, which used to exist here but is long gone. The bridge is a surviving remnant of this park. The bridge sat abandoned for many years. However when documented by HistoricBridges.org in 2014, a project to repaint and install a new deck on the bridge was in progress. Today, the bridge is fully restored and open to pedestrian traffic during the non-winter seasons. The trusses appear to retain good historic integrity.
The state Historic Bridge Inventory noted the bridge's potential significance as part of the amusement park, yet wrote off the design of the bridge as not significant. This does not make any sense. The truss has an arched shape to it. In this sense, it is much like the truss found in suspended deck truss bridges, except that in this case, instead of suspending the deck, the deck follows the curved shape of the truss. The aforementioned suspended deck truss bridges didn't become popular until the 1930s, and curved trusses of any kind, suspended deck or not, are primarily again a post-1930 thing. It is unclear how this bridge could be described as a late example of its type. HistoricBridges.org finds the bridge to have engineering significance as an unusual form of truss. Most foot truss bridges do not have an arched design.
Information and Findings From Ohio's Historic Bridge InventorySetting/Context The pedestrian bridge spans a lake in a setting with modern apartment buildings at Indian Lakes State Park. The truss is associated with the Sandy Beach Amusement Park that operated here from 1924 to 1966. Physical Description The bridge is riveted, trussed steel thru truss with an arched profile. Summary of Significance The ca. 1924 truss is a later example of its type, adapted to pedestrian uses and with an arched profile, so it is not technologically significant. Its significance, if any, is in association within its larger setting/context at the former Sandy Beach Amusement Park. It is beyond the scope of the bridge inventory to assess the significance of the off-system bridge under Criterion A. Bridge Considered Historic By Survey: Possibly Under Criterion A |
