This multi-span through truss bridge remains open to private traffic with alterations and despite significant deterioration. The bridge has high levels of deterioration in uncommon areas, such as the top chord cover plate which has a massive amount of section loss. Perhaps this bridge was made from early steel rather than rust-resistant wrought iron. The exact construction date is unknown but its a-frame portal bracing indicates it is an 1890s product of the Wrought Iron Bridge Company.
Presumably during its time In private ownership, the bridge has had some unusual steel repairs made to it. The deck is maintaiined and was being oiled at the time of field visit.
Lengths given are estimates based on an estimated 14.6 foot panel length.
Information and Findings From Ohio's Historic Bridge InventorySetting/Context The bridge carries a one-lane road over a road severed by construction of I-77. The road now serves as a private drive to a few houses or cottages. Physical Description The 2-span, approximately 200'-long pin connected Pratt thru truss bridge is supported on ashlar substructure units. The inclined end posts and upper chords are built up box sections, and the verticals are toe-out channels with lacing. The lower chords are eye bars. There have been many alterations to the bridge including welding of the end panel floorbeam hangers and added material to the end posts. Rod hangers have also been placed inside some verticals. There is holed section on the upper chords. Integrity There are a variety of welded repairs, including channels welded to the inclined end post. Rod hangers have been placed at many verticals. There is also serious deterioration of unaltered members, like the upper chords. Summary of Significance The pin connected truss bridge is dated stylistically to ca. 1890 and the Wrought Iron Bridge Company based on details like the end panel floorbeam hanger and the design of the portal braces; there is no plaque. Unfortunately the bridge is in deteriorated condition with many welded repairs and impacted and damaged members. It is not as complete and historically important example of its type and design. Wrought Iron Bridge Company truss bridges are not uncommon in the state, and there are more complete and documented examples. The altered and deteriorated bridge is not historically or technologically significant. Bridge Considered Historic By Survey: No |
