Bridge Documentation

This bridge is significant as one of a group of three heritage bridges. One unique feature of this road is it has three truss bridges all within a relatively short distance, crossing the Nith River. There is the west, middle, and east bridges. Each bridge appears to date to the same period, and has similar construction details, yet each bridge has something different in its overall design caused by the varying conditions at each of the river crossings. This road offers a unique experience to observe how a bridge design would be adjusted for different site conditions.

This bridge is an eight panel Pratt through truss, making it a fairly long example of its type, yet the truss is not as deep (tall) as one would expect for a span of this length, which visually makes the bridge look even longer. It is an interesting comparison to the west bridge which is only seven panels yet has deeper trusses. Traditionally longer bridges have deeper trusses because a deeper truss is a stronger truss.
