Bridge Documentation

At first glance, this appears to simply be a larger 5th Street Bridge but it is in fact quite a bit newer, although its design is quite similar. It is as a result not as significant in terms of heritage value, but is still a worthy example of transportation heritage, particularly since it tells of a past era when large boats used the Thames River in this area. The bridge is today inoperative for boats. The bridge was built in 1961-1962. The Bridge and Tank Company of Canada, of Hamilton, Ontario built the superstructure, which is a bridge company that was historically known as the Hamilton Bridge Company, but changed its name. The substructure contractor was the Detroit River Construction Company of Blenheim, Ontario. The general consulting engineer was W. G. McGeorge and Sons of Chatham, Ontario. The consulting engineer for the bascule superstructure was Hazelet and Erdal of Chicago, Illinois. This company was the successor to the Scherzer Rolling Lift Bridge Company who invented the rolling lift bascule bridge and also designed the nearby 5th Street Bridge.
