This bridge is a small but noteworthy example of a concrete bowstring (rainbow) arch bridge. Once common in Wellington County, these bridges are at risk of demolition, and as such this preserved example is an increasingly rare surviving example of this visually pleasing bridge type.
The relocation and reuse of metal truss bridges (often in parks or on trails for pedestrian use) is well-documented. In contrast, it is almost unheard of for concrete bridges of any kind to be relocated and reused, due to their weight, rigidity, and solid construction. Concrete bridges cannot be dismantled in the way that truss bridges can to make relocation easier. As such, this bridge, which was relocated from the 6th Line in the Township of Guelph-Eramosa in 2004, is an example of an almost unheard-of preservation solution for concrete bridges. The relatively small size of this concrete bowstring bridge was likely critical in making such a project feasible. Even with this small size, picking the bridge whole using a crane meant accommodating a bridge weighing 65.6 tonnes.
This bridge's new location is within the Wellington County Terrace complex. It is the centerpiece of a "Heritage Garden" that was part of the landscaping plan for the nearby Wellington Terrace Long Term Care Facility.
