This bridge is a very old and rare example of a stone arch bridge in Ontario and has additional significance for its use of bricks for the barrel of the arch.
This bridge was originally built to serve a railway line, but today the bridge and line is a rail-trail. Despite the non-motorized use, this bridge was for a time being considered for demolition and replacement. Fortunately, local concerned citizens recognized the rarity of a stone arch bridge both locally and in Ontario in general and successfully advocated for its preservation. As a result, the bridge stands today restored and in excellent condition. The restoration work was sensitive to the original design and materials of the bridge. This bridge is, among stone arch bridges, a rare example of one which uses brick rather than stones for the barrel (intrados) of the arch. It appears it was the brick portion of the bridge that was in the worst condition on the bridge prior to the restoration work, but fortunately the restoration appears to have replaced the deteriorated bricks in-kind, maintaining the design.
