This bridge is an uncommon example of a deck truss in Ontario. The two span structure is traditionally composed for a 1923 truss bridge. It does have a number of alterations, including several replaced or supplemented truss members. The deck may have been widened at some point as well. The original railings have been lost. Despite these alterations however, the overall bridge truss superstructure retains its original appearance and the majority of members appear to be the original riveted design.
A new bridge has been constructed on new alignment east of the bridge on Dorchester Road. Different sources report different fates for this heritage bridge as a result of this project. Some documents state that the contractor plans no work at the existing bridge. However, many news articles state that the heritage bridge is to be replaced with a pedestrian bridge following completion of the new vehicular bridge. This is an extremely wasteful and foolish idea. The existing bridge is capable of carrying vehicular traffic, therefore it should have no problem holding up to the weight of pedestrians. If a pedestrian crossing is desired here, the existing heritage bridge should simply be left standing, blocked off to vehicular traffic, and left open for pedestrians. The money that would have been used to destroy the heritage bridge and build a new pedestrian bridge could instead be used to make any repairs needed to the heritage bridge.
This historic bridge has been demolished. This map is shown for reference purposes only.
