This bridge is one of a decreasing population of surviving riveted truss bridges in the Niagara Region that have managed to escape demolition. This bridge has been closed to vehicular traffic but remains open to pedestrians. At some point the deck was replaced with a new concrete deck which remains in good condition today. The truss itself appears to be unaltered, including original railing, floorbeams and even original deck stringers.
Aside from the Welland Canal and Niagara River, Niagara Region, is a region noted for its striking lack of heritage bridge preservation. It is hoped that this bridge will become an exception. With older and rarer types of heritage bridges in Niagara Region having been demolished or about to be demolished, the significance of smaller, once-common bridges like this is rapidly increasing on a local scale.
Robert Wardell contacted HistoricBridges.org and reported that he heard this bridge was moved to this location from Smithville, by the feed mill which now is Niagara Feeds. This is quite possible, since relocating and reusing metal truss bridges was not uncommon long ago.
