Note: Bridge lengths given are extremely rough estimates.
This bridge no longer operates for boats but it remains a noteworthy heritage bridge since it retains the design and materials of a swing bridge despite its lack of use today. As such, it has been preserved and recognized as a heritage bridge, with interpretive signage present at the bridge. In this sense, it is one of the few heritage bridges of this type to be preserved in Ontario, particularly outside of the historic canal systems in Ontario that are managed by Parks Canada. As part of the rehabilitation, rods have been welded to some bridge members, but the original members remain in these areas. Original lattice railing remains on the bridge.
The bridge includes a single concrete rigid frame approach span.
The main swing span features a center-bearing design. The circular rack and the pinion remain in place, as evidence of the swing bridge design. A bridge tender house remains on the bridge as well.
Located on a major road in Huntsville, this bridge is an iconic landmark for the area.
Below, a 1910 postcard shows a previous swing bridge in Huntsville.
