View An Article About The Hydro Canal and Its Bridges By The Niagara Falls History Museum

This bridge is one of three concrete arch railway bridges built between 1918 and 1920 over the Niagara Hydro Canal. There originally were also seven highway bridges, but all of these were demolished and replaced between 1969 and 1984. Oddly, the railway bridges, the only original bridges that remain, were actually the first bridges built over the canal and thus are older than the now-demolished highway bridges.

Photographing the bridges of the Hydro Canal is extremely difficult. The Hydro Canal is completely fenced off with extensive fencing. The reason for keeping people out is obvious. The water in the canal flows extremely fast in a channel with sheer concrete walls and no ladders. Falling into the canal would likely be fatal. The problem is that the fencing is fairly far away from the canal and between the canal and the fence there are also many shrubs and trees. All these things make photography of the bridges very difficult. Currently only a few overview photos are available.
