This is a large and impressive multi-span deck truss bridge, and it sits next to the stone piers of the previous bridge at this location. Interestingly, the previous bridge was actually a simpler type of metal bridge: a plate girder. The plate girders have been removed, but some impressive stone arch approach spans remain in place on the old bridge. The previous bridge was reportedly built in 1867. If this date is correct, it would have been a very early example of a riveted plate girder bridge. The 1867 bridge was the second bridge at this location. The stone on the bridge came from the Gibson Quarry at Jordan.
The present bridge is also a bridge of high historic significance, due to its multi-span deck truss configuration. The bridge is supported by large riveted steel bents.
