This bridge is a rare example of a pony truss swing bridge. The bridge retains excellent historic integrity with no major alterations. The bridge also still opens for boats.
There were once apparently three swing bridges of this design on the Murray Canal along with a plate girder railway bridge. Today, the railway bridge and this highway swing bridge are the only two unaltered heritage bridges. The swing bridge at Carrying Place appears to have been replaced with a modern bridge that imitates the design of the original bridge. A third swing bridge in between this bridge and the railway bridge, near the mid-point of the canal, has been completely demolished.
Given this, the preservation of this heritage bridge should be given a high priority. The bridge should be rehabilitated with attention paid to maintaining original materials and design, rather than complete replacement, even if a replacement might imitate the design of the heritage bridge.
