This bridge is one of two similar bridges in Peterborough that are an outstanding example of a typical plate girder swing bridge on the Trent-Severn Waterway. This example stands out for its lack of alteration. It retains original railings, and the sidewalk metal grate deck appears to be original. The sidewalk cantilevers and plate girders appear to be unaltered. The bridge also has traditional wedges at the end of the bridge to lock it in place when closed, although these wedges appear to be power by modern pneumatic equipment. Some of the swing bridges on the Trent-Severn waterway have pneumatic pistons (without wedges), which is not a traditional form of end-lock for swing bridges. Given the decreasing population of unaltered or preserved heritage bridges on the Trent-Severn Waterway, this bridge should be given a high priority for preservation, with attention given to maintaining its historic integrity.
