Originally carrying the Buffalo and Lake Huron Railroad, this bridge crosses the location of former Welland Canal alignment (2nd and 3rd Welland Canals). At one time, a vertical lift bridge also carried the railway over the current 4th Welland Canal, immediately to the east of this bridge. The vertical lift bridge was similar to the highway bridge to the south which remains in place. The vertical lift bridge appears to have been demolished when the railway was abandoned. However, this swing bridge survived. The swing bridge is not the original bridge for this crossing, and based on its traditional plate girder construction it looks to have been built towards the end of the 3rd Welland Canal's life. The bridge appears as though it could have been operated by hand, based on two attachments found on the deck of this bridge, which connect to gears which remain in place on the bridge. Overall, this bridge appears to have good historic integrity.
