This noteworthy structure is actually a dam which includes a bridge as an integral part of the structure. The bridge is a riveted pony truss bridge with three concrete t-beam approach spans. The varying span lengths and types of the bridge appear to be a result of accommodating the dam functions of the structure. The bridge appears to have been originally constructed for vehicular traffic, before being bypassed by a modern bridge that stands next to the bridge. After that, the bridge was serving pedestrian traffic. Now, the bridge has been closed to traffic due to deterioration.
The dam has been the subject of controversy, since some groups want the dam removed to restore the original, nature configuration of the creek, while others want the deteriorating dam to be repaired to preserve the Silver Lake which it has formed, and is used recreationally today. At this time, it appears the dam will be repaired. However it appears that the county wants to demolish the heritage bridge. While the structure is certainly deteriorated, the truss is not beyond repair. The bottom chord is severely deteriorated due to dirt that has been allowed to accumulate on it, trapping moisture and causing deterioration. However, the bottom chord could be replicated. The overall truss retains enough integrity that it can very likely be restored. It is hoped that the truss will not be demolished, but plans will be changed to restore the bridge, particularly the truss span, which is the most significant component.
