View A Presentation Discussing Rehabilitation and Replacement Options For This Heritage Bridge

This bridge is a small but noteworthy example of a rainbow arch bridge, also known as a concrete bowstring arch bridge. The bridge is the only example of its type in Hamilton Township. The bridge retains good historic integrity with no major alterations noted. There is some deterioration, particularly with the verticals (hangers) on the bridge. There has been a discussion of what to do with this bridge, including consideration of both rehabilitation and demolition/replacement. The most recent presentation seems to indicate that rehabilitation is the preferred alternative. It is greatly hoped that this plan to rehabilitate the bridge will move forward. It would be one of the only bridges of this type in Ontario to be rehabilitated. Most of these beautiful concrete bowstring heritage bridges in Ontario are either unpreserved, or are being demolished and replaced. This is a devastating loss of both heritage and beauty, and preserving this bridge would be a nice change from the usual.

W. C. Gibson of Port Hope, Ontario is cast into the curb of the bridge indicating the contractor that built the bridge. The bridge's construction date is unknown but is likely in the 1920s.
