Bridge Documentation

This bridge has been a casualty of bad driving. Someone drove something too tall right into the portal bracing of this bridge. This impact not only destroyed the portal bracing, it severely bent the top chord and end post at the northeastern end of the bridge. Vertical clearance signage was clearly posted directly on the portal bracing of the bridge. Drivers of trucks and other oversized vehicles have a responsibility for knowing how heavy and tall their vehicles are and observing the weight and height restrictions of bridges accordingly. The signs that display the height and weight restrictions for bridges are not put there for fun or for decoration. They are designed to provide essential information to protect both the bridge and the people who use it.

Despite the damage to the end of this bridge, the damage could be repaired by replacing the damaged parts. The ends of the top chord for example could be cut and spliced with a new section of top chord; replacing the entire top chord would not likely be needed. Oddly, the southwestern end of the bridge appears as though it may have suffered some sort of damage at an earlier date and repaired as well, since the current southwestern end posts are bolted (rather than riveted) suggesting they are replacements. Vertical and diagonal members at this end of the bridge also showed bolted details suggesting they were replaced. It would appear this bridge has taken a lot of abuse over the years.
