Bridge Documentation

This bridge is a lightweight pony truss with members and chord composed largely of angles and no box beams or channels present in the design. Bridges of this design tend to be older and/or were built on roads which would carry less and lighter traffic. The bridge is a traditionally composed example of its type with no unusual or unique details noted. The lightweight design does suggest it is an earlier generation riveted truss bridge. This example retains good historic integrity, although one outrigger was badly damaged by a collision and the plaque is missing. Sideroad 5 is an otherwise straight road, but it curves suddenly so as to cross the river at an economic angle, which was a typical practice during the period when the bridge was built. On busier high speed roads these sudden curves are often condemned by traffic engineers as a safety hazard. On a quiet, rural gravel sideroad, these curves are a welcome change that conceal this bridge until the curve is rounded, with the bridge popping up, a pleasant surprise for those who may have not expected to find it.
