This attractive and officially designated heritage bridge was saved from demolition plans due to interest in preservation by the local community. It had been closed to vehicular traffic in 2007. The bridge has instead been rehabilitated for non-motorized traffic. The primary work done on the bridge was repairs to the abutments and replacement of the bottom chord, floor beams, and deck stringers. According to news articles these areas were suffering from severe deterioration. Rotation of the abutment was causing the bottom chord to buckle, and some of the floor beams had apparently detached from the truss and were hanging off the bridge. While the loss of original material in the bottom chord and floor beams is unfortunate, these alterations are not easily visible to users of the trail. The bridge has an unaltered appearance from the roadway. This bridge is also one of the few heritage truss bridges in Ontario where a preservation commitment is evident. Elsewhere, Ontario's heritage truss bridges are being demolished at an alarming rate. Preservation projects like this hopefully will inspire other municipalities to cancel demolition plans for their heritage bridges and instead seek preservation alternatives.
The construction date of the bridge is apparently unknown, but assumed to have occured between 1910 and 1920.
The cost of the rehabilitation work was listed as $230,000 and undertaken by Hollingworth Construction of Bolton, Ontario. B.M. Ross & Associates provided project design services.
