Bridge Documentation

Note that this bridge is located in the town of St. Marys, which is in the County of Perth, in southwestern Ontario. It should not be confused with the town of Perth in eastern Ontario, which a website visitor noted is also known for stone buildings like St. Marys.

There are two stone arch bridges in St. Marys. One has been completely demolished and replaced and while it may have the appearance of the old bridge, is not original, and has only fake aesthetic value and no historic or engineering value. This bridge on the other hand appears to be all original, and is a spectacular example of how long-lasting and efficient a stone arch bridge could be, as this ancient 1884 structure continues to carry modern day traffic.

An interpretive plaque near the bridge reads: "This stone arch bridge was designed by Mr V. Williams and was built by local stonemasons Messrs James Clyde and James Elliot. It was completed October 13, 1884 at a cost of $3800. Restored in 1979 by the Town of St Marys with a grant from the Ontario Heritage Foundation."
