Bridge Documentation

This bridge is one of two impressive high level railroad bridges in St. Thomas. This bridge has a more complex superstructure of the two, with an impressive deck truss span complimented by a series of deck plate girder spans providing an approach at each end. The bridge rests on equally impressive steel bents. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the bridge however are the labels rolled into the beams of the bents that read "Burbach 381" The only steel or iron mill known to have the name Burbach appears to be the Burbach Iron and Steelworks, which is a German mill. This would imply that at least some of this bridge's steel was imported from Europe. This would be extremely noteworthy, since the majority of metal bridges contain iron and steel fabricated by either Canadian or American mills.
