2018 Update: This bridge has been demolished and a new bridge is being built.
This bridge is an excellent example of a concrete bowstring arch bridge, or "rainbow" arch bridge in Ontario. Ontario is noted for its diverse but decreasing collection of concrete bowstring arch bridges. This particular bridge is an example of a provincial standard design concrete bowstring that was used on the provincial King's Highway system. These bridges display a common design of railing and decorative inset rectangular panels on the arch rib. The Talbot Road Bridge is an outstanding example of this type, with no noteworthy alterations. It includes a single cantilevered sidewalk. Talbot Road is old alignment of King's Highway 12 a short distance to the west.
If the 1920 construction date given for this bridge is accurate, it is also one of the oldest surviving examples of this type of bridge in Ontario.
Because Highway 12 follows the same route a short distance to the west, and because Talbot Road begins and ends back at Highway 12, it is not essential that this bridge be able to carry heavy truck traffic. Heavy and wide trucks simply can use Highway 12 instead. As such, this bridge is a strong candidate for preservation for continued light vehicular use. However, the bridge is in need of rehabilitation. It is hoped that the bridge will be preserved rather than demolished and replaced.
