This impressive high level railway bridge is noted for its varying design of deck truss spans. The spans contrast visually. The the central span has very shallow trusses but many truss panels, giving it a very tight looking appearance. The side spans are actually deeper trusses, and look more massive, but the panel count for these spans is much lower, giving them a more open appearance. It is not known why this bridge has designed with these different trusses. The bridge seen today is the third bridge at this location. The bridge rests on piers which are part concrete and part stone. The stone portions were reused from the previous (second) bridge at this location, and they date to 1869. The 1869 bridge had five spans, while the bridge seen today has three spans. Train usage of the bridge ceased in 1989.
