Bridge Documentation

This bridge is a very unusual structure. It has the appearance from a distance of a concrete arch bridge. However anyone walking under the bridge on the riverside trail can instantly see that this is actually a riveted deck plate girder with arched (variable depth) plate girders. The outside faces of the girders have been encased in concrete. Concrete encased plate girders appear to be extremely rare in Ontario. Arched deck plate girder highway bridges are also uncommon. The center span of this bridge is also of particular interest because it reveals that this bridge is actually a rare cantilevered deck plate girder. Two thin stepped gaps are visible in the center girder. These gaps indicate that the center span has within it a suspended span that rests on two cantilever arms. The end spans of the bridge therefore appear to function as the anchor arms for this bridge.

This deck of this bridge has been extensively redone and it is configured as an unusual mixed use bicycle and vehicular bridge, with bicycle lanes integrated into the vehicular lanes. Motor vehicles are not allowed to pass bicycles on the bridge. The original railings of the bridge have been replaced. The bridge has handsome stone abutments.
