Bridge Documentation

This bridge is among the more unusual of the movable bridges on the Welland Canal because of the way its spans are located and configured. The railway crosses the canal at the bottom of the group of large locks called the Flight Locks. The Flight Locks have two "lanes" for ships to use. Because the railway line crosses at this location is must accommodate this arrangement. Therefore, the bridge is configured with one single leaf bascule span over each half of the lock. The two bascule spans are separated by the structure in between each half of the lock. The bridges are arranged that, with the exception of this small gap, they have the appearance of the double leaf bascule bridge. However, they are structurally independent single leaf bascule bridges. They follow the standard design of Scherzer type rolling lift bascule with a through girder superstructure that is found on the other plate girder bascule bridges of the Welland Canal. There also are two fixed deck plate girder approach spans that carry the rail line over the Welland Canals Parkway. A plaque with a 1923 date and listing the Canadian Vickers Limited of Montreal, Quebec is on these spans. It is from this plaque that the date and builder of this bridge has been listed. It is however possible that the bascule spans were erected by a different contractor, perhaps even at a slightly different date.
