Although Bruce County has a number of surviving metal truss bridges (many of which are at planned for demolition and replacement), the vast majority of these bridges have riveted connections, something that holds true for truss bridges across Ontario - most have riveted connections. As such, this bridge with pinned connections is rare in Ontario. Not only are pin-connected truss bridges rare, they represent the earlier generation and design of metal truss bridges. They were commonly built from 1880 to 1915, and after 1905 they rapidly decreased in popularity of the more rigid rivet-connected truss bridge.
This bridge also has some unusual detail. A lightweight longitudinal rod runs through the middle of each truss. Also, the portal bracing knees are fixed to the end posts via a single large bolt.
Although portions of the bridge have been repaired, resulting in the replacement of some portions of the end post and replacement of some rivets and bolts, the majority of the bridge retains historic integrity of materials and design.
