With a 1973 construction date, this bridge falls outside the usual 1970 cutoff date that HistoricBridges.org established for its coverage. However, this bridge is included both because of its being part of Portland's unique collection of bridges, and also because of the bridge's engineering significance. The bridge was the longest tied arch span in the world when completed, and still reportedly held that record in 1999, although more recently, projects in China may have finally beat the length of the bridge. The bridge was also an engineering achievement due to its erection involving a lift of the 6,000 ton main span, which was also a world record at the time.
The overall length of the arch structure, including the main through arch spans, and the single approach span on each side of the through arch span, totals 2,154 feet. The total length given by HistoricBridges.org is an estimate from where the Cook Street/Gentenbein Avenue ramp starts to the end of the southern I-405 ramp Portland, which is the closest to a direct path across the bridge. The bridge also has numerous other winding ramps of greater approach length.
