This bridge is a very attractive design of vertical lift bridge, with its fixed through truss approach spans matching the design of the lift span, although some of the approach spans are a couple panels shorter. The lift towers frame neatly onto the top of the adjacent fixed truss spans. The bridge is thus a large and outstanding example of a vertical lift bridge designed by the firm that was famous for lift bridges, Waddell and Harrington. With a 1910 construction date it is also noted as a very early surviving example as well. Portland is noted for bridges with atypical deck layouts on its bridges, including this bridge's use of an additional vehicular lane, cantilevered outside of the truss lines, in addition to the cantilevered sidewalks.
The bridge retains good historic integrity, with no major alterations. One minor alteration is the addition of expansions to the piers, which now accommodate a new steel bracing bracket that extends over the cantilevered decks. These additions appear to provide supplemental stability to the lift towers.
