This bridge is a good example of mid 20th century riveted truss bridge construction. Riveted truss bridges are a relatively uncommon sight on Interstate Highways. This is in fact a pair of bridges with different construction dates. The northbound bridge (and primary focus of this listing on HistoricBridges.org) dates to 1955. The southbound bridge is nearly identical and was built in 1964 under the direction of bridge engineer Ivan D. Merchant. A notable difference with the southbound bridge is that bolts were used instead of rivets for field connections (shop fasteners are rivets), a testimony to the changing trends in construction that took place between the construction dates of these two bridges.
