Of the many amazing historic bridges on the Oregon Coast Highway, this is one of the most notable bridges. This spectacular bridge is richly ornamented and consists of an unusual combination of concrete rainbow arch spans and a steel bascule span. The truly unique four bridge houses around the bascule span are works of art in their own right, as are the smaller decorative pillars at the ends of the arch spans and the ends of the entire bridge as well.

Note: A special photo gallery from ODOT with historical bridge construction photos is available. For those looking for detailed descriptions of the photos in that gallery, refer to this list of captions (the photo number corresponds to the number at the end of the photo's filename, and also note HistoricBridges.org presents the photos in the same order, sorted by date). The captions in the link here were provided by ODOT and HistoricBridges.org has NOT verified their accuracy.

Above: Portion of original bridge drawing showing how the concrete rainbow arch is reinforced by solid steel pieces (not just rebar). Details of the steel eyebars for the bottom chord (tie) are shown.

Above: Portion of original bridge drawing showing the bascule trunnion as well as the operating rack and pinion.
