This bridge is a rare surviving example of an expressway overpass in Michigan that features stringer that are built-up beams rather than rolled beams and also retains original railings. In fact, from the freeway the bridge looks quite similar to a deck plate girder. However an inspection under the bridge shows parallel beams of equal size - a stringer. A few other bridges like this one remain in Michigan, but most have lost their original railings and do not have the level of historic integrity that this one does.
The section of I-94 between Kalamazoo and Indiana should be considered a heritage expressway, as there is a large number of curved t-beam bridges to the tune of 18.5 Mile Road Bridge still remaining with guardrail integrity.
