This is the last remaining historic bridge in Battle Creek's downtown area and fortunately this structure, which is one of the oldest arch bridges in Michigan, has been restored. The restoration included replacing the pre-existing guardrails, which were not original. MDOT described the new railings as "period" railings, but did not specify whether they replicate this bridge's original railings. The new guardrails may not match the original railings that would have been present on the bridge, but they are much more attractive and appropriate for the structure than the previous guardrails. The outsides of the arches were refinished in concrete, which was textured with some architectural expression, in the form of texturing and vertical lines cast into the pier. This expression is attractive, but note that these features do not appear to have been part of the original design.
