This is the first Ohio River Bridge, located right after the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers merge. The enormous through arch on this bridge and its location truly make this bridge the visual and literal gateway to the Ohio River. The bridge is a braced ribbed arch, sometimes called a "trussed arch" bridge and it features wire cable hangers. Spectacular views of this bridge can be had from Point State Park in downtown Pittsburgh. This bridge's most distinctive visual feature is the height of its through arch, which soars far above the roadway in dramatic fashion. The views from Point State Park, nice as they are, fail to convey the feel of how tall the arch really is. Only by walking or driving over the bridge can the height of the arch truly be experienced. While at mid-span of this bridge, turn around for some excellent views of the beautiful Pittsburgh skyline. This bridge features some Warren pony truss approach spans also, which add to the character of the bridge.
