This bridge was originally built as a pair of deck plate girder bridges, the westbound bridge being a little longer than the eastbound bridge. Unfortunately, by the time HistoricBridges.org documented the bridge the eastbound bridge had already been demolished. Photos on this page are therefore only of the westbound bridge. The bridge was noted for its heavy skew and riveted built-up steel bents. One of the bents had an unusual design that permitted a long-gone light rail system to pass under it. Another bent extended to the ground at one side, and on the other side had no column an instead the top rested on the abutment, a result of the heavy skew of the bridge.
Information and Findings From Pennsylvania's Historic Bridge InventoryDiscussion of Bridge (Westbound) The skewed, nine span, simply supported, deck girder bridge is supported on concrete abutments and built up, steel column bents. The girders are built up as are the transverse beams at the end of each span into which the longitudinal girders and bent legs are framed. Rolled floorbeams support a concrete deck with concrete parapets topped with two rail high horizontal railings placed ca. 1971. An example of a common bridge type used since the mid 19th century, it has no innovative or disinguishing details. The bridge was constructed as part of a 1930-1932 realignment of US 30 that eliminated almost three and a half miles of heavy grades and poor alignments. The bypass is not associated with the historic route of the Lincoln Highway. Neither the bridge nor its setting is historically or technologically significant. Discussion of Surrounding Area (Westbound) The bridge carries 2 lanes of westbound US 30 over a local road that was original route of the highway. Eastbound traffic is carried on an adjacent structure (02 0030 0231 0000). It carries traffic over an undistinguished, residential section of Chalfant borough that does not have historic district potential. Discussion of Bridge (Eastbound) The 1932, skewed, 7 span, 317'-long, deck girder bridge is supported on concrete abutments and built up steel column bents. The girders are built up as are the transverse beams at the end of each span into which the longitudinal girders and bent legs are framed.
