Note: This is not the famous Bollman Truss Railroad Bridge of Savage, Maryland. Click here to switch to that bridge's page.
One of the rarest bridges in Pennsylvania, and among an elite group of nationally significant bridges that feature cast and wrought iron construction, this bridge is also one of the last surviving bridges that were designed by famous B&O Railroad Chief Engineer Wendel Bollman. The bridge is also significant as a rare example of a pin-connected Warren truss. It is also among the oldest surviving truss bridges remaining, with an 1871 construction date. It also features the extremely rare patented type of built-up beam known as the Phoenix Column. History is combined with beauty in the form of aesthetic treatments in terms of an ornate, decorative portal design.
This bridge was saved from demolition by concerned people who have successfully relocated this bridge onto a rail-trail near Meyersdale, Pennsylvania in 2007. The bridge had been last repaired back in 1910.
Be sure to review the HABS HAER data pages for a brief history of this bridge.
Photos from this bridge were taken after the relocation, but before the deck was completed. This worked out well, allowing HistoricBridges.org to get photos of the details unhindered by a deck and whatever (most likely distasteful) modern railings end up on the bridge.
