This massive deck truss bridge is one of the few surviving patented Wichert truss bridges in existence. Pittsburgh with its unusually large collection of historic bridges is lucky enough to have two. Despite the fact that Pittsburgh has two of this bridge type, the rarity of this bridge type on a national scale is such that each bridge should receive the highest preservation priority. Although the bridge was allowed to deteriorate to a fairly substantial extent, and for a while appeared to be at risk for demolition, as of 2024 the future for this bridge is bright with a major rehabiltiation planned. The bridge was designed by the City of Pittsburgh, which had to license the Wichert truss design. On the bridge plaque, the Wichert Continuous Bridge Corporation is named as patentee.
