This bridge is one of several surviving plate girder highway bridges in Chester County. A number of these bridges use of handsome stone abutments, which while not unusual in Chester County, is a generally unusual to find a plate girder resting on. This plate girder bridge, which sits on concrete abutments instead, is a far more typical example of a plate girder highway bridge. This bridge has been closed to traffic.
Information and Findings From Pennsylvania's Historic Bridge InventoryDiscussion of Bridge The bridge was field inspected because no bridge file was available at the time of file review. The one span, 62'-long thru girder bridge built in 1931 is supported on reinforced concrete abutments with wingwalls. The bridge with rolled floorbeams has a laminated timber deck (ca. 1980). Rivets have been replaced with high-strength bolts at the floorbeam connections. The bridge is an altered example of one of the most common bridge types in the state. The built-up thru girder type/design has been in widespread use since the mid- 19th century. The bridge is not historically or technologically distinguished by its setting or context. Discussion of Surrounding Area The bridge carries a 2 lane road over a stream in a rural area of active farms and woods. No buildings are visible from the bridge.
