This is one of a very rare surviving group of Phoenix column pony trusses all in a single county.
Information and Findings From Pennsylvania's Historic Bridge InventoryDiscussion of Bridge The 3 panel, 45'-long Pratt pony truss bridge is supported on stone abutments. The pin-connected truss tension diagonals are rods, with eyebar bottom chords and Phoenix column top chords. The bridge has been determined eligible by the PHMC. The single span, 45’-long, pin-connected Pratt pony truss bridge is supported on stone abutments and carries unimproved Faux Road over Wapwallopen Creek. The truss tension diagonals are rods, with eyebar bottom chords and Phoenix section top chords and inclined end posts. The truss verticals are a pair of angles with lacing supported by midheight outriggers. Standard design Phoenix Company connecting pieces and bearings are present. The timber plank deck is supported on rolled steel stringers (5 interior I-beams and 2 fascia channels) and riveted built-up floorbeams. Timber stringers are sistered to the center and fascia stringers to serve as a nailer for the timber deck. The floorbeams are suspended below the bottom chord pins and connected to the trusses by a U bolt. The Pratt pony truss is one of the few remaining pony trusses that employ phoenix sections and is mostly complete. The character-defining features include the truss form and method of truss member end connection (pin connected Pratt pony truss), the Phoenix section top chords and inclined end posts, and the floorbeam connection detail (U-bolt connection below the bottom chord). Discussion of Surrounding Area The single lane bridge carries an unimproved road over a stream in a sparsely developed, forested setting. The bridge is located north of a sharp bend in Faux Road. The surrounding area is sparsely developed. The area is largely forested with few residences in the immediate area and some agricultural land use. Type of Bridge Service: One lane (less than 18'-wide travelway) serving twodirectional traffic. Faux Road is an unimproved local road approximately 9’ wide serving two-way vehicular traffic.
