The HAER documentation above references a similar tower, now demolished, built in Valley Forge. The documentation also mentions and discusses this Gettysburg tower as well however.
This non-bridge structure is featured on HistoricBridges.org because it helps document the fact that the appropriately named Variety Iron Works of Cleveland, Ohio was not only a bridge builder, but did indeed build other types of structures as well. Additionally, this tower has some details that are similar to those found on metal truss bridges. The tower has a builder plaque, decorative brackets, and a tower framework connected with rivets and pins. The observation deck itself is protected by a roof supported by angle. A cast iron disc in the center of the observation deck displays the names landmarks and battlefield locations with arrows pointing to the direction they are located and stating how far away they are. A riveted bench surrounds this disc. The tower appears to retain excellent historic integrity. There were once several towers in Gettysburg. It appears some were demolished, and another tower, Oakridge Observation Tower, was cut shorter so that it is very short and lacks a roof. A photo is available here.
