This bridge retains excellent historic integrity and is an uncommon combination of structure types. It features a t-beam approach span at each end of the bridge with a riveted through plate girder main span. The t-beam spans have concrete paneled railings. The plate girder span suffers from areas of 100% section loss on the girder web, although the overall structure remains in decent condition.
Information and Findings From Pennsylvania's Historic Bridge InventoryDiscussion of Bridge The B&LE's Filer Overhead Bridge is a simply supported span consisting of a built-up thru girder main span over the tracks, flanked by 2 reinforced concrete T beam approach spans. The bridge is supported on a concrete substructures of spill thru abutments and concrete column and cap beam bents with crash walls. The T beam spans have flat paneled concrete parapets, while the thru girder span has knee braces and built-up members and floorbeams. The bridge is neither historically or technologically significant, combining 2 common technologies. The B&LE is not considered historically significant. Discussion of Surrounding Area The bridge carries a 2 lane road on a vertical profile over 2 active B&LE RR tracks and a private road in an agricultural setting north of Grove City. The B&LE was a subsidiary of US Steel, and was used to connect the steel making regions of the Pittsburgh district with the ore docks and shipping facilities along Lake Erie.
