This bridge is a riveted through truss foot bridge that was built by the Bethlehem Steel Company to allow local workers to walk across the river to reach the Bethlehem steel mills on the east side of the river. Only one span is original and with historic value, and that is the east span. The western span is a modern replacement truss. This discussion focuses on the historic span. The span is very simple in appearance. Its members are chords are all composed of rolled wide flange beams. This makes the bridge look newer than it is, and it also is not surprising to see the use of these types of beams beams because Bethlehem Steel Company essentially invented and popularized the wide flange beam, sometimes actually called "Bethlehem Beams."
