This bridge is a tiny Parker pony truss bridge. Because of its short length, it has very shallow trusses. Making the trusses look even smaller is the large, handsome stone abutments that the bridge rests on. The bridge appears to retain good historic integrity.
There is the possibility that the construction date is incorrect. The 1903 date is ten years earlier than some other extremely similar bridges in southwestern Pennsylvania. It is possible the bridge actually dates to something like 1913.
Information and Findings From Pennsylvania's Historic Bridge InventoryDiscussion of Bridge The 40' long and 13' wide, riveted Parker pony truss bridge built in 1903 is supported on ashlar abutments with wingwalls. The top chords and inclined end posts are built-up box sections, and the lower chords verticals, and diagonals are composed of channels with stay plates. The floorbeams are built-up. The field connections are rivets and bolts, and if the 1903 date is correct, the bridge is historically and technologically significant as an early example of a riveted Parker pony truss. The bridge is nearly identical to 30720103322102 that is dated to 1919. Discussion of Surrounding Area The bridge carries 1 lane of an unimproved township road over a stream in a rural area of active farms and scattered 20th century residences.
