Information and Findings From Pennsylvania's Historic Bridge Inventory

Discussion of Bridge

The 2 span, 60'-long, prestressed concrete box beam bridge built in 1954 is supported on concrete pier and concrete-capped stone abutments with wingwalls that date to a previous bridge. It has fascia-mounted welded steel channel railings. The bridge is an example of the standard design box beam bridge, developed in 1950-51 by the Concrete Products Co. of America (Pottstown). Pennsylvania was a national leader in the use of prestressed concrete. Over 220 pre-1957 examples of the standard design box beam bridges have been identified, with more than 30 from before 1953. The design was not significantly changed after its initial development. It is the early pre-1953 examples, complete with railings, that represent the historical and technological significance of the bridge type and design in Pennsylvania. This bridge is a later example with no noteworthy details. It is not historically or technologically significant for its setting or context.

Discussion of Surrounding Area

The bridge carries a 2 lane road over a stream in a sparsely developed, forested setting. The bridge is more than 1 mile south of the Muddy Creek Forks Historic District. It is not in the district.
