This bridge was an example of a steel stringer bridge with what was Pennsylvania's attractive concrete balustrade railing, a standard plan railing used on many steel stringer and t-beam bridges in Pennsylvania. This particular bridge sat on stone abutments that may have been from a previous bridge.
Information and Findings From Pennsylvania's Historic Bridge InventoryDiscussion of Bridge The 1940, single-span, 67'-long steel stringer bridge with standard concrete balustrades is supported on ashlar abutments with flared wingwalls. Sections of the balustrades are damaged from weathering and collisions. The bridge has a concrete deck and steel angle welded cross-braced diaphragms. It has no innovative or distinguishing details and is an example of the most common 20th century bridge type in the state. Neither the bridge nor its setting/context are historically or technologically noteworthy. Discussion of Surrounding Area The bridge carries a 2 lane road on a horizontal curve over a stream in a sparsely developed, forested setting. Just south of the bridge, crossing SR 1028 at grade, is a single active track of the Buffalo and Pittsburgh RR, a former subsidiary of the B&O connecting Pittsburgh and north central PA with the Great Lakes.
