This is a pony truss with design details indicative of a highway bridge designed by the railroad. Use of riveted angles for truss members and a top chord with a large piece of vertical plate are often seen on highway bridges designed by the railroad, but rarely seen on highway bridges elsewhere. Indeed, this bridge, despite carrying a highway over a waterway, was very likely designed and built by the railroad. The Pitcairn Railroad Yard Bridge used to connect Pitcairn (at Wall Avenue) with the Pennsylvania Railroad Yard on the other side of Turtle Creek. The Pennsylvania Railroad station was also located just across the bridge. The station, as well as the bridge, was closed in the late 1970s. The bridge looks similar to two Warren pony trusses built over the former Pennsylvania Railroad nearby in Westmoreland County. Those bridges were built by the railroad in 1902 and 1906, suggsting this bridge also dates to the early 1900s.
This bridge is today abandoned and fenced off.
