This bridge is a very rare surviving example of a bridge by the Horseheads Bridge Company, and it has the decorative details used by the company. Specifically, the company liked to use twisted bar for its knee braces on the portal bracing and sway bracing. This simple design decision gives the bridge an attractive and unique appearance that immediately identifies the bridge as a product of its builder.
Information and Findings From Pennsylvania's Historic Bridge InventoryDiscussion of Bridge The one span, 125' long, pin-connected Pratt thru truss bridge is attributed to the Horseheads Bridge Co., and it was fabricated in 1897. It is supported on a concrete and stone or stone veneer substructure placed in 1983. The trusses themselves are remarkably complete. The portal braces have a lattice web, and the knee braces at the portals and at all upper lateral bracing has a decorative fill of twisted bars, a characteristic detail of the fabricator. The floor beams are rolled and suspended form the lower panel points with U-shaped hangers. The verticals are channels with lacing, and the lower chords and diagonals are eye bars. The bridge is historically and technologically significant based on its completeness, documentation, and distinctive detailing. Discussion of Surrounding Area The bridge carries one lane of an unimproved road in a forested setting in the Wyoming State Forest. There are no buildings visible from the bridge.
